Doris the Exploress comes to Sebring
I met up with Doris the Kiwi for the first time this year, and asked her for a brief description of her impressions of the 12 Hours. Delightfully, she sent me a wonderful biography I thought it only prudent to share with the readers of this blog;
“My mother tells me that my introduction to motorsport was in utero, when she and Dad attended the New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe. My first recollection of anything motorsport related is attending off road days in the rain in the Hunua Ranges, south of Auckland. At 7yrs old I have to say I wasn’t overly impressed. My feelings towards motorsport changed when I hit my early teens and we lived near the local speedway at Te Marua. I couldn’t wait for Friday night to go and watch the stock cars, side cars, bikes, and occasional demolition derby.
We moved to England when I was in my mid teens and as far as motorsport was concerned it was a very barren period in my life. It wasn’t until my early 20s that I rediscovered my love for the sport. At first it started with making sure I was home every other Sunday to watch F1 on tv. From watching on tv I went to attending a few races, attending both the British and Hungarian GPs many times in the 90’s and 00’s.
